How To Take Care of Children With Special Needs
Parents of child with special needs has to do a little extra to keep up with their very special little ones, but then no one ever said it’s easy to be parents. There is no need to be scared or get irritated while handling children with physical or mental challenges. You should stand up as understanding parents and fulfill all requirements with pleasure. Here are five tips which will make it easier for you to deal well with a special needs child.
1. Understand your child well
Understand your child and his problems well. You should have proper knowledge of your child’s health. You will get it from a pediatrician. Well, it will cause trouble if you behave with your special needs child without good knowledge of his conditions, problems and needs. Only an understanding parent can take better care of a child that may require many things, but will be unable to express them in a way other kids may do. Know your child better, be more understanding and deal with them compassionately.
2. Give round the clock care
If your child is mentally or physically handicapped, he may require better care round the clock. As you may have to go work and manage many daily things, it is better to either hire a helper for the child or place him in a care facility. If you stay at home with child, you can see him and converse with him in your free time. Otherwise, you should visit the child regularly at the childcare center.
3. Take the child for regular outing
You should take your child for an outing regularly. You can watch a film, spend some quality time with the child in a park or take him to the beach. It will be a new experience for the kid, of course. However, you should always keep in mind that these things shouldn’t be done as a routine. That is, if you take your child to film every Sunday, he won’t be able to skip the habit on any given Sundays.
4. Engage the child in new activities
Quite often, special needs children have a monotonous life. They wake up, have their food, sleep and do other activities on stipulated times. You need to introduce and incorporate new things every time to this regular cycle for a refreshing change. Let your kid stay up late for about an hour or so than his regular sleep time or take him out for a walk in the evening or early morning.
5. Give better treatment and food
A specially-abled child may overcome the disability through consistent treatment. Hence, you should give better medical treatment to the child. It is as much important that you should provide the child with better food for good health. But, it should be done only as per the need of the child’s body. Overeating may swell up the child’s body as he will be sitting lazy most of the time.
6. Share Experiences
Every kind of disability occurs due to some specific reasons. Know about the reason. Have extensive decisions with an expert and get to know better about the mental and physical condition of your child. Get to know about the whys and hows of the disease. Get to know better about the specific kind of care that is required by your child. Try to surf through various sites and join the online groups formed by parents who have a disabled child and share your experience with them. There will be parents that you meet in the clinic whose children have the same condition as your child. Talk to them. Sharing experiences is far better way to learn.
7. Make them feel the “Acceptance”
We may write a number of things about your child and his/her care but remember that these advices are futile unless you have accepted the condition of your child. Losing hope is not what we are asking you to do. We are simply asking you to accept the condition of your child and put whatever effort you can for his/her well being. Most of all, never be ashamed.
8. Education
Just because your child suffers from a certain medical condition does not mean that he is not entitled to education. Maybe you will not be able to send him/her to the school in the neighbourhood that other kids in the block attend but there are good schools for the children of special needs. Educate them and find out their hidden talents.
9. Pep-Talk
Discuss the condition with your child. Make him understand his/her needs that come with the condition. Teach them to be proud of what they are themselves. Never let them feel as if they won’t be able to do something just because they are not like other kids. Be with them every step of the way and be proud of them too. Do not hide things from your kid ever. Treat him according to his age as he grows up.
10. Prepare your child
Lot of times, society doesn’t want to accept things easily. There will be situations where you will be snobbed by the society and your child might not be treated very well. Make your child strong enough to bear with all these situations and still get back at them. Wit and patience play big roles here. Never lose your temper or shout in these situations but use your intelligence and develop the same thing in your child.
The kids may have special needs but they are still a kids. Love them, play with them and talk to them like you would to any other child. Never make them feel otherwise. Build them up so that they never give up in the face of any situation in life.
Being a parent of a special needs child sounds like it could be hard. Doing a little extra, I agree would be an everyday thing with your children. Your tip about finding a care service to help you out when needed, sounds like a good option to help your child.
